Air Quality Challenges in the Occitanie Region

Occitanie combines a very sunny Mediterranean climate, four major cities (Toulouse, Montpellier, Nîmes, Perpignan), and regular influxes of Saharan dust. Ozone, a summer pollutant, and fine particulate matter remain the dominant environmental challenges there.

In 2024, air quality improved, thanks to favorable weather conditions: the number of days on which ozone limits were exceeded fell by about two-thirds in one year. But exposure remains high: in the four major cities, up to 2.6 million residents were affected by ozone and 1.7 million by fine particulate matter, for which wood heating is the leading regional source.

In light of the stricter European thresholds expected for 2030, the monitoring system must be further strengthened. To address these challenges—measuring, diagnosing, treating, and raising awareness—FIMEA members in Occitanie provide practical expertise in metrology, pollution control, technical assessment, and training.

Projects and Initiatives Undertaken

On May 27, 2026, the “Oikos 1” event was held at the Cité de Toulouse, featuring lectures, roundtable discussions, activities, and a special episode of Radio-Immo, whose studio was relocated for the occasion. With the Henri Mondor Health and Environment Group, Santé Respiratoire France, and Ad’Occ . The event brought together 80participants: healthcare professionals and medical-social care facilities, indoor air quality (IAQ) companies, testing and pharmaceutical laboratories, real estate professionals, associations, and elected officials.
