Impact of domestic air cleaners on indoor air quality under real conditions of use
The aim of this report is therefore to summarize what we know about the impact of air cleaners under real-life conditions, integrating the results of international scientific studies and technical reports over the last fifteen years (2012-2025).
This document has been produced as part of the Qualité Air Solutions Territoires (QAST) program, supported by ADEME, and is one of the products associated with the program. It does not constitute an exhaustive analysis of the literature on the subject, nor is it intended to recommend the use of any particular scrubber or technology.
Most of the documents analyzed are recent results acquired since 2020.
The aim of this summary is to characterize the effectiveness of these devices with regard to different pollutants (particles, gases, bioaerosols) in different environments and in situ conditions, based on available studies (including work carried out as part of QAST1 and QAST2).
The aim is to identify the extent to which these devices actually improve indoor air quality in real
use, the benefits measured and their limitations, and what recommendations can be made for their optimal use.
To carry out this literature review, a targeted literature search was carried out on publications from the last fifteen years concerning indoor air cleaners (2012-2025). The Web of Science, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, PubMed and Scopus scientific databases were queried using keywords targeted to the subject.
