Impact of air cleaners on particulate matter under real-life conditions
The aim of the QAST2 study – part of the Qualité Air Solutions Territoires project – (phase 2) is to assess the actual effectiveness of air purifiers on particle number concentrations, under actual conditions of use, in occupied tertiary environments.
This study extends the work of QAST1, which led to the construction of three dynamic indicators and identified the contextual determinants influencing the efficiency of stand-alone air cleaners.
Five representative scrubber models were tested in three contrasting room configurations: a 34 m³ meeting room, a 200 m³ open-plan office and a 55 m³ shared office. Particle measurements were carried out using a combination of measuring instruments, accompanied by measurements of contextual data on occupancy, opening of vents, power consumption and outdoor particle concentrations.
The results show that, in real-life situations, the efficiency of air purifiers varies widely depending on the context of use.
