Air Quality Challenges in Île-de-France
Île-de-France is the most densely populated region in France, and its pollution has a clear source: road traffic. The highest concentrations of nitrogen dioxide are found in the heart of the Paris metropolitan area and along major thoroughfares (the ring road, highways, national roads), where they can be more than double the background levels, whereas in rural areas they are three to four times lower than in Paris.
The underlying trend is encouraging: since 2005, levels of fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide have fallen by approximately 55% and 50%, respectively. However, air pollution remains responsible for nearly 8,000 premature deaths per year in the region, and the focus is shifting toward the upcoming 2030 European standards; nearly a quarter of residents in the Île-de-France region already live in areas that would exceed those standards. Ozone levels, meanwhile, began to rise again in 2025, with a consistent increase across the entire region.
In response to these challenges (measuring, diagnosing, treating, and raising awareness), FIMEA members in the Île-de-France region provide practical expertise in metrology, pollution remediation, technical assessment, and training.
