Air Quality Challenges in Hauts-de-France and Normandy

The FIMEA North region covers Hauts-de-France and Normandy, two densely populated, heavily industrialized areas characterized by major transportation routes and key port areas, stretching from Lille and Dunkirk to the Seine estuary. Pollution in the region is dominated by fine particulate matter, which accumulates in winter during periods of high pressure, and by traffic-related nitrogen dioxide.

In 2024, air quality continued to improve in both regions. In Normandy, only ozone still exceeds regulatory thresholds, while nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter, and sulfur dioxide remain public health concerns. However, nitrogen dioxide concentrations measured near traffic in Lille, Le Havre, Rouen, and Caen suggest that future European limit values for 2030 will be exceeded, and ozone levels are rising significantly (by up to 26% over ten years at certain sites).

The industrial and port sectors (chemicals, refining, steel) require close monitoring, including the odor nuisances that have long been a concern in the Seine Valley. In response to these challenges—measuring, diagnosing, treating, and raising awareness—FIMEA members in the Nord department provide practical expertise in metrology, pollution remediation, technical assessment, and training.
