Air Quality Challenges in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region
As France’s largest region, Nouvelle-Aquitaine is most strongly characterized by agriculture and forestry. Around Bordeaux and the major urban areas, the main challenges remain mobility and nitrogen dioxide; in the rest of the region, fine particulate matter remains a public health priority, exacerbated in winter by wood-burning heating and, at times, by desert dust.
The region is particularly notable for its unregulated pollutants: pesticides—which have been monitored for eighteen years, with more than a hundred compounds tested for—pollen, and odor nuisances, the second most common cause of complaints from local residents after noise.
Added to this are the challenges related to port operations and biomass heating plants. In addressing these challenges—measuring, diagnosing, treating, and raising awareness—FIMEA members in Nouvelle-Aquitaine provide practical expertise in metrology, pollution control, technical assessment, and training.
